Summer in Seattle is beautiful — but it comes with a few things every dog owner should know before heading out for a walk. In this video, Reining Cats and Dogs owner Kirsten Branham and dog walker Hannah share the tips they actually use on every summer walk.
They cover how to check if pavement is too hot for your dog's paws, what signs of overheating to watch for (and which dogs are most at risk), how to keep dogs hydrated on the go, and why certain plants — including horsetail, which is common throughout the Pacific Northwest — can be dangerous. They also talk about the "sniff walk": why slower, shorter walks on hot days are often better for dogs than longer ones.
It's a quick, practical watch — and full of real-world advice from people who spend a lot of time out on leash.

Those tall, reed-like plants you see along trails and in Pacific Northwest yards? They might be more dangerous than they look. Horsetail (Equisetum spp.) is a common plant in the Seattle area — and it's toxic to dogs.
In this video, we cover what horsetail looks like, why it's harmful to dogs, the symptoms to watch for, and what to do if your dog gets into it on a walk.
At Reining Cats and Dogs, our certified dog walkers are trained to keep a close eye on what your pup sniffs, nibbles, and gets into along the way. GPS-tracked walks, real-time photo updates, and sitters who genuinely care about your pet's safety — that's what we're here for.
If you think your dog has eaten a toxic plant, contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center right away: (888) 426-4435.
